9:00am - 10:00am | TOUR 1: Tour and Talk at The Art Chapel, a Plain FACT | 1302 F Street, Lincoln, NE 68508 (Behind the F Street Neighborhood Church).
Course Credit: 1.0 HSW Course #: 100.2024
The Art Chapel will be a safe and inspiring studio for adults to explore and cultivate their creativity through art and craft instruction provided at low cost. The Art Chapel will interact with the South Downtown community, an economically depressed area in Lincoln with few cultural outlets, by offering gallery shows and other art-related events for the public. The historic building, Lincoln’s first church structure built in 1873, is being transformed from a neglected space into an asset for a struggling neighborhood. After a two-year hiatus during the pandemic, UNKL design-build studios FACT + Plain Design Build are working together to complete this important building. Actual Architecture Co. is the architect of record.
This building tour will feature the Art Chapel near its completion, anticipated in Fall 2024. A brief talk will accompany the tour to highlight the student-led design-build process and Plain-FACT's particular approach to the adaptive reuse of a non-listed historic building. The tour will focus on subtle project details that confound the relationship between preservation and new construction while addressing modern building codes and building performance goals. Design and construction progress images.
